DEMBE'S STORY
JOURNEY BACK TO AFRICA
Dembe had always known he would do great things. At just twelve years old, the son of a respected Chief, he dared to stand before the Council of Men and ask for something no boy his age has ever been granted—the chance to take the Test of Manhood. But on the Island of the Baboons, Dembe’s journey did not unfold as he had imagined.
By the next day, the world he knows is gone. Captured by slave traders and forced onto a ship bound for lands he has never seen, Dembe is swept into the harsh and unforgiving reality of the transatlantic slave trade. Though he is taken far from home, his heart never leaves Africa. It became his compass, his promise, and his reason to endure.
On a plantation in Trinidad (in the West Indies), Dembe met Henry, the lonely and mistreated orphaned nephew of the plantation owner, who saw first hand the injustice of slavery with startling clarity. Against all odds, the two boys form a friendship that refuses to be broken, even when powerful forces try to tear them apart.
What follows is an unforgettable adventure that stretches across oceans and continents. From daring escapes to encounters with a ragtag army of Australian Pirates, from a mysterious lost city to the Parliament in England, Dembe and Henry risk everything to fight for something far greater than themselves - for slavery to be abolished!
Fighting For Freedom. For Hope.
And for the chance for Dembe and the other slaves to return home.
In a triumphant and deeply moving conclusion, Dembe’s journey comes full circle as he sails back to Africa, not as the boy who was taken, but as someone forever changed by courage, friendship, and the unshakable belief that even the smallest voice can echo across the world and make a difference.
